Crystal Palace's new signing inherits jersey number worn by two Nigerian-born players

Crystal Palace bolstered their ranks with the signing of Brazilian attacker Matheus França earlier this month from Flamengo.

Fifteen days after the Eagles confirmed the acquisition of França, the Selhurst Park outfit informed through their official website on Sunday that their new signing has been assigned the number 11 jersey for the 2023-2024 season.

Crystal Palace number 11 shirt became vacant following Wilfried Zaha's move to Galatasaray this summer.

The Eagles revealed that other iconic players who have worn the number 11 in the past include Nigerian-born Victor Moses, Vince Hilaire, Tony Taylor and Don Rogers.

Legendary Crystal Palace midfielder John Salako, who was born in Ibadan, also wore the club's number 11 shirt in the past.

While academy graduate Moses registered 69 career appearances and scored 11 goals  for Palace, former England international Salako made more than 200 appearances in red and blue between 1986-1995.

Moses was on the books of Crystal Palace for eight years, before transferring to Wigan Athletic in January 2010.

The former Nigeria international was named the Championship Player of the Month for December 2009, after getting on the score sheet four times from six appearances in the division.
