Future of Nigerian-born midfielder at Arsenal uncertain as proposed move to Euro club collapses
Published: August 22, 2023Ten days before the close of the summer transfer window in England, the future of Nigerian-born midfielder Tim Akinola at Premier League club Arsenal is uncertain.
Akinola is among the academy stars Arsenal are looking to sell or loan out before next Friday's deadline, so much so that he was left out of the development squad's training camp in Spain and has not figured for the Londoners at academy and first team levels in the new season.
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Akinola's proposed move to European club Neftchi Baku has collapsed, leaving his future at the Emirates Stadium unresolved.
Neftchi Baku and Arsenal had reached a club-to-club agreement regarding Akinola transferring to the Azerbaijani club but there were complications in the 2022 Olympic national team invitee agreeing personal terms and as a result, the deal is off.
The 22-year-old is not eligible to be included as an U21 player on Arsenal's Premier League roster to be submitted at the end of the transfer window, and is not age-eligible to play in the Premier League 2, except he's named as one of the over-age players.
Signed from Huddersfield Town in 2020, Akinola is in the last one year of his contract at the Gunners.
He spent the second half of the 2021-2022 campaign on loan at Dundee United and was at Chesterfield for the whole of last season.
Arsenal are also looking to move on Nigerian goalkeepers Arthur Okonkwo and Ovie Ejeheri, fullback Ryan Alebiosu, midfielder Miguel Azeez and striker Nathan Butler-Oyedeji.
