1994 AFCON winner explains why Tottenham boss started Udogie over Davies in win v Bournemouth

1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner Efan Ekoku has revealed why Super Eagles-eligible defender Destiny Udogie has been preferred over Ben Davies as the first-choice left-back for Tottenham Hotspur in the first few games of the new season.

The left-back returned to Tottenham this summer after spending the whole of last season at Udinese where he notched  seven goal contributions.

He has started all three Premier League games for Spurs this season and has been impressive.

The 20-year-old has been chosen by Ange Postecoglou as the first-choice left-back in his four-man defence over the more experienced Ben Davies.

Ekoku, who was on commentary duties for the Premier League world feed in Tottenham's 2-0 win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, has revealed why the Italian-born fullback is being preferred over the 30-year-old Davies.

"He (Udogie) certainly provides a greater attacking threat than Ben Davies, the Welshman who is on the bench today. That is the more reason why he is in the side at the moment," Ekoku said.

Udogie registered his first goal contribution for the north London side in their win over the Cherries as he assisted Dejan Kulusevski for the club's second goal in the 63rd minute.

The Italian-Nigerian made way for Ben Davies in the 82nd minute due to injury.
