Six players of Nigerian descent get Chelsea shirt numbers for 2023-2024 season
Published: August 29, 2023Chelsea's extended squad numbers for the 2023-2024 season has been revealed ahead of the development squad's Papa John's Trophy clash against the first team of Milton Keynes Dons at Stadium mk on Tuesday evening.
Six players of Nigerian descent have been assigned squad numbers namely Faustino Anjorin, Richard Olise, Chinonso Chibueze, Tyrique George, Somto Boniface and Saheed Olagunju, according to information from Chelsea Youth.
Anjorin, who has been heavily linked with a temporary departure from the Blues before the close of the summer transfer window, has been allocated the number 42 kit.
The versatile midfielder wore the number 55 at the back of his jersey in his last competitive game for Chelsea, against Barnsley in the Emirates FA Cup back in February 2021.
Fullback Olise has been assigned number 58, winger Chibueze number 66, while George, Boniface and Olagunju will be wearing the numbers 67, 76 and 81 respectively.
The Nigeria-eligible players will wear the same shirt numbers should they feature for the first team in 2023-2024.
With the exception of Anjorin, the aforementioned players have not received call-ups to Chelsea's first team.
At first team level, Noni Madueke has been allocated number 11, Lesley Ugochukwu 16 and Carney Chukwuemeka 17.
