'Passed it into the back of the net' - Jamie Vardy hails Ndidi for finishing like a seasoned centre-forward
Published: September 16, 2023Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy has praised Wilfred Ndidi for his brilliant goal against Southampton in a Championship clash at the St Mary's Stadium on Friday night, admitting that the defensive-minded midfielder finished like a seasoned centre-forward.
With Southampton threatening a comeback after England underage of Nigerian descent, Sam Edozie halved the deficit, Ndidi found the net to restore the Foxes two-goal advantage in the third minute of first half stoppage time.
The Super Eagles star received a pass from Stephy Mavididi, switched the ball from his left to his right, and then sat down Southampton defender Harwood-Bellis before slotting past the goalkeeper.
Ndidi is almost back to his best after injuries prevented him from being consistent in the last couple of seasons, having directly participated in five goals in his last eight games combined for club and country.
Speaking post-match, Vardy highlighted that Leicester City had four different goalscorers in the big win versus Southampton and lauded Ndidi for his poacher's finish.
"We've even been fortunate enough tonight for Wilfred Ndidi to hit the target and get a goal himself," Vardy told LCFC TV.
"Yes, I told him when we came off, he passed it into the back of the net instead of swinging and seeing where it goes."
Ndidi attracted genuine interest from Turkish Super Lig clubs in the recently concluded transfer window but manager Enzo Maresca decided to keep him to help their push for an immediate return to the Premier League.
