Man Utd include Oyedele as an overage player in UYL squad, two other Nigerians named on roster
Published: September 17, 2023Manchester United have announced their UEFA Youth League squad ahead of their opening game in Group A against Bayern Munich, with three Nigeria-eligible players making the cut.
Manager Travis Binnion has selected defensive midfielder Maxi Oyedele, fullback Habeeb Ogunneye and striker Victor Musa in a 40-man squad list.
For the 2023-2024 season, players are eligible to play in the UEFA Youth League if they were born on or after 1 January 2005.
Oyedele, who was born on November 7, 2004, is not age-eligible for the competition but has been included as one of the overage players.
According to UEFA regulations, up to five players born on or after 1 January 2004 may be included on the list of 40 players, provided the player has been eligible to play for the club concerned without interruption for the two years immediately preceding 19 September 2023, or has been eligible to play for the club concerned for two of the three years immediately preceding 19 September 2023.
Of the aforementioned players of Nigerian descent, only Oyedele has made his debut in the UEFA Youth League and it came against Young Boys in December 2021 - his only appearance to date in the competition.
The 18-year-old was a non-playing substitute against Atalanta, Villarreal and Borussia Dortmund in the 2021-2022 UEFA Youth League.
Oyedele and Ogunneye are on professional contracts at Manchester United, while Musa is a first year scholar.
Manchester United's other opponents in Group A of the UEFA Youth League are Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen.
