Confirmed: Right-footed central defender signs new contract with Chelsea
Published: September 19, 2023Through their official website, Chelsea have announced that talented central defender Alfie Gilchrist has committed his future to the club by signing a new two-year contract.
Gilchrist is now tied to the Blues until at least June 2025, with the club holding an option for a further year.
The defender, who skippers Chelsea's development squad, has received two call-ups to the first team without making his senior debut for his boyhood club.
He was a non-playing substitute against Manchester United in Chelsea's penultimate game of the 2022-2023 season and was also on the bench for their most recent game in the Premier League at Bournemouth.
Gilchrist has been described as a right-footed central defender who can play in a back three or back four.
The 19-year-old has been on the books of Chelsea since U11 level after he was snapped up from Queens Park Rangers.
Last season, he started 22 out of a possible 26 games in the Premier League 2 and also made appearances in the EFL Trophy, where he featured against the first teams of Sutton United, Oxford United, Peterborough and Cheltenham.
Gilchrist was named in Chelsea's 29-man squad for the pre-season tour of the United States this summer.
