Maja will not be cap-tied in 2023 as West Brom confirm Super Eagles striker is out until after WCQs

Through their official website, Championship outfit West Brom have confirmed that Nigeria international Josh Maja will spend approximately eight weeks on the sidelines. due to an ankle injury.

Maja tore his ankle ligaments in the final moments of the Baggies' goalless draw at Bristol City this past weekend after coming off the bench.

Manager Carlos Corberán could not replace the striker in stoppage time as he had used up all his five substitutes.

Maja joined West Brom as a free agent in the summer transfer window, signing a three-year contract after opting not to extend his stay at French second tier club Bordeaux.

Having missed a large chunk of pre-season preparations, the Fulham and Sunderland academy product has yet to establish himself in the West Brom side with all his five appearances in the league coming off the bench.

Maja, who has one cap for the Super Eagles, is not in contention to play a cap-tying game for Nigeria when they face Lesotho and Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November - the national team's final fixtures of 2023.

West Brom have confirmed that he will begin his rehabilitation following a period of rest and the club’s medical staff anticipate he will return to first-team action after the November international break.

London-born Maja made his Super Eagles debut in a friendly against Ukraine in September 2019.
