PL Cup: Chelsea winger George scores first competitive goal for development squad
Published: September 19, 2023Chelsea U21s made a winning start to their Premier League Cup campaign on Tuesday evening, thrashing Luton Town 4-1 at Kingsmeadow with a player of Nigerian descent Tyrique George on target for the young Blues.
Chelsea manager Mark Robinson handed a start to Academy Scholar of the Year for the 2022-2023 season, Somto Boniface, while George entered the game as a substitute in the 71st minute.
Leo Castledine gave Chelsea the lead on the half hour mark and Dylan Williams doubled the advantage six minutes later as the hosts established a 2-0 lead, but Millar Matthews-Lewis pulled one back six minutes into first half stoppage time.
Castledine got his second of the evening with a minute of regulation left when he headed past Horlick.to restore Chelsea's two-goal advantage.
George wrapped up the scoring when he finished from close range in injury time to add more gloss to the scoreline.
It was the first time the English-Nigerian winger has scored in a competitive game for Chelsea's development squad and the goal came in his fourth appearance for the age group.
George logged 158 minutes spread across four matches before opening his account for Chelsea U21s.
In February, he signed his first professional contract with the Blues that will keep him at Stamford Bridge till the summer of 2025.
