UYL: Man Utd team captained by Nigeria-eligible midfielder beaten by Bayern Munich
Published: September 20, 2023Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich in their opening game of the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday afternoon with three players of Nigerian descent on parade for the young Red Devils at FC Bayern Campus.
The Manchester United U19 squad was captained by Poland U21 international Maxi Oyedele and joining him in the starting lineup was fullback Habeeb Ogunneye while first year scholar Victor Musa entered the game as a substitute in the 46th minute.
United started the brighter side but Bayern Munich began to dominate as the game went on and were rewarded in the 40th minute when Robert Ramsak broke the deadlock.
Just before the hour mark, Musa was presented with an opportunity to restore parity but his header was no problem for Bayern Munich goalkeeper Schmitt.
At minute 66, the Spanish-Nigerian striker saw his effort from close range blocked by the Bayern defence.
Ten minutes from time, Michael Scott was given too much space in the box and he curled the ball into the net to double the home team's advantage.
Ogunneye and Musa made their UEFA Youth League debuts against Bayern, while Oyedele made his second appearance in the competition.
