Sporting director cites Bellingham as he explains why Borussia Dortmund missed out on Boniface
Published: October 18, 2023Borussia Dortmund's Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl has revealed the reason behind not signing Victor Boniface in the last transfer window.
As previously reported, the Black and Yellows were offered the opportunity to sign the Super Eagles forward but passed up the opportunity.
One of the reasons cited for not signing the 2022/2023 UEFA Europa League joint-top scorer was that Borussia Dortmund didn't need a striker but the eventual signing of Niclas Füllkrug negates that.
Kehl has opened up on the reason behind his club missing out on signing the Nigeria international.
"I'm not annoyed at all because I know that, especially in my job, timing and general conditions are incredibly important elements in order to be able to make a decision at the right moment," he told Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung via Fussballtransfers.
"At the time such transfers were initiated and implemented, we did not know that Jude Bellingham would be sold. So there was no budget."
Boniface would go on to join Bayer Leverkusen and has had a blistering start to life in Germany, scoring 7 goals in seven Bundesliga games.
The 22-year-old has won back-to-back Bundesliga Rookie of the Month and was nominated for the Bundesliga Player of the Month for the second consecutive time.
Boniface has reached double figures for goal contributions already, registering 12 goal involvements in ten games for Bayer Leverkusen, which is a further proof of his brilliant start to life in Germany.
