'He has clearly shown that he is of value' - Ajax coach satisfied with performance of Akpom
Published: November 30, 2023Ajax manager John van 't Schip has expressed his delight with the performance of in-form forward Chuba Akpom.
After his initial struggles, the Hale End Academy product is beginning to produce the goods for the Dutch giants and has been pivotal towards their resurgence in the past few weeks.
The recent performances of the 28-year-old have seen him become Ajax's second top scorer in the Eredivisie with 5 goals, level with Brian Brobbey, his direct competitor, who has started and played more games.
Despite his surge in form, the former Middlesbrough forward has started just one of the last five games across all competitions.
Speaking during his media duties before Ajax's clash with Marseille UEFA Europa League, van 't Schip expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the Anglo-Nigerian forward.
In quotes relayed by Voetbalzone, the 59-year-old said: "Akpom has also been important in his substitute appearances and against Vitesse.
"But that is also where we want to go: more competition in the selection. That is already slowly happening at the front."
"He has clearly shown that he is of value. He can also play from the start, so that's a bonus for us."
Akpom is yet to open his goalscoring in the Europa League and will be hoping to do so against the French giants tomorrow at the Stade Vélodrome.
With 2 group games left to be played, Ajax have a slim chance of qualifying for the next round as they are yet to record a victory after four games.
