Bayer Leverkusen in the market for a striker to provide cover for AFCON-bound Boniface
Published: December 14, 2023Bayer Leverkusen are seeking a replacement for Victor Boniface who is set to represent the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
According to German sports magazine Kicker, the Bundesliga table-toppers want a new striker who will cover for Boniface during his absence at AFCON and will also be able to complement him upon his return from the tournament.
While the Black and Reds will still have Patrik Schickto call upon, there is uncertainty whether the Czech forward will be able to cope with the rigours of playing weekly as he is just recovering from a long-term injury
Should the Super Eagles proceed to the further stages of the competition, Boniface could miss up to six games including the DFB Cup quarter-final clash with Stuttgart and the crucial match against Bayern Munich, thus the reason behind Bayer Leverkusen's search for a striker
Xabi Alonso's side are seeking to win the Bundesliga title for the first time in their history with Boniface playing a vital role in their charge having recorded 14 goal contribution so far.
Besides the 22-year-old, they could also be without Edmond Tapsoba, Odilon Kossounou, Amine Adli and Nathan Tella due to the Africa Cup of Nations.
