Published: December 18, 2023Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that the Nigeria Football Federation have submitted to the Confederation of African Football a provisional 40-man squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
An analysis of the roster revealed that six goalkeepers, thirteen defenders, eight midfielders and thirteen forwards have been selected by Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro.
Chippa United glovesman Stanely Nwabili, Sporting Lagos' Christian Nwoke, Southampton loanee Paul Onuachu and Rangers center forward Cyriel Dessers have been included on the roster.
There are no major surprises on the roster, with Peseiro opting to work with majority of the players he has handed invitations to since he was appointed Nigeria manager in 2022.
Ahmed Musa, a veteran of three AFCONs, and William Troost-Ekong who were absent from the squads for the October and November internationals have been handed recalls to the team.
Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest), Semi Ajayi (West Brom), Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City), Calvin Bassey (Fulham), Frank Onyeka (Brentford), Joe Aribo (Southampton) and Alex Iwobi (Fulham) should be on the plane to Ivory Coast barring an injury in the training camp.
Nigeria will open group play at the 2023 AFCON against Equatorial Guinea at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Abidjan (Jan. 14), followed by a meeting with hosts Ivory Coast (Jan. 18) and conclude with a game against Guinea Bissau at the iconic Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan on January 22.
