'Didn't give Rashford a kick' - PL all-time top scorer Shearer hails Bassey for pocketing Man Utd striker
Published: February 27, 2024Premier League's record goalscorer, Alan Shearer has given Calvin Bassey a huge compliment for his impressive performance during Fulham's 2-1 win over Manchester United last weekend, noting that the Nigeria central defender kept Marcus Rashford in check.
After 1,456 minutes without a goal for the Cottagers, Bassey opened his Fulham account in the 65th minute when he smacked the ball home on his second attempt after a loose ball fell to him from a corner kick.
Bassey registered a joint team high four clearances in the Premier League encounter at Old Trafford, an honor he shared with Tosin Adarabioyo and Antonee Robinson,
The Super Eagles star has been recognized for his outstanding performance with Alan Shearer selecting him in the Premier League Team of the Week for matchday 26.
Rashford was barely involved in the game and had the least touches (28) of the twenty-two players named in the starting lineup.
Defending his decision to name Bassey in the Best XI, Shearer wrote: "Scored his first Premier League goal and didn’t give Marcus Rashford a kick."
Bassey was in top form at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the Super Eagles keep four consecutive clean sheets before conceding a late goal in their semifinal clash against South Africa.
