FA Cup: Unused sub Ogunneye misses Man Utd milestone as Casemiro late winner sends Red Devils through
Published: February 28, 2024Teenage Manchester United fullback, Habeeb Ogunneye received his maiden call-up to the senior team for their 5th-round FA Cup clash with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils would win the match by a solitary goal courtesy of Casemiro, a minute before the end of the normal regulation time.
Erik ten Hag's side had seen a lot of chances to open the scoring in the first half with Antony hitting the crossbar and two headers from Scott McTominay being saved by Forest goalkeeper, Matt Turner.
They continued their search for the opening goal in the second half but they couldn't find the breakthrough till the 89th minute.
Bruno Fernandes intuitively played a free kick towards the near post and Casemiro made a run to the ball before smashing through the legs of Turner.
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi also featured in the encounter and came close to scoring in the first half but was denied by André Onana.
Ogunneye couldn't come on in the encounter which was understandably so as the Red Devils left it very late to get the winning goal.
The right-back is one of the rising stars in Manchester United youth sides this season, featuring in the U18 Premier League, FA Youth Cup, Premier League 2, UEFA Youth League, and the EFL Trophy, making 17 appearances across the aforementioned competitions.
With the senior team decimated due to injuries, he had to be called up for their FA Cup tonight and must have been delighted to have received such honor.
Ogunneye missed a Manchester United appearance milestone after he was not utilized off the bench by Erik ten Hag.
He would have become the 250th academy graduate to represent Manchester United's first team if he had featured against the two-time European champions.
