20yo Super Eagles-eligible central defender Abbey makes his debut for Greek giants Olympiakos

Thirty-eight days after Olympiakos confirmed the capture of Nelson Abbey, the Super Eagles-eligible central defender finally made his competitive debut for the Greek giants.

Abbey was named in the startling lineup for the Greek Super League clash between Olympiakos and Volos NPS at Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis on Sunday evening.

In the last matchday of the regular season, Abbey was partnered in central defence by Greece international Panagiotis Retsos.

The 20-year-old impressed in his first game for  Olympiakos, helping the Red-Whites post their first clean sheet in four league games.

However, Olympiakos did not have problems securing the three points as Volos NPS had a player sent off in the sixth minute and their numerical superiority told as Ayoub El Kaabi (2) and Stevan Jovetic found the net in a routine victory.

In the January transfer window, Abbey opted against transferring to Premier League team Luton Town and instead chose to join one of Europe's traditional clubs, Olympiakos.

His appearance against Volos NPS was his 32nd game as a professional, with 31 in the colours of boyhood club Reading.

An England youth international, Abbey has been assigned the number 36 jersey for the remainder of the season.
