Pundit insists Nwabali would be a good signing for QPR but blasts South Africa's DStv Premiership
Published: March 07, 2024Queens Park Rangers' fan pundit Louis Moir reckons Stanley Nwabali would be a good signing for the Hoops amid speculation linking the Super Eagles goalkeeper with a transfer to the Championship club in the summer transfer window.
The Hoops are scouring the market for a reliable goalkeeper as a possible replacement for experienced glovesman Asmir Begovic who is out of contract at the end of the season and have made enquiries about the availability of Nwabali.
Nwabali made a splash at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he kept four clean sheets, bettered only by Golden Gloves winner Ronwen Williams.
And those performances have not gone unnoticed by European and Asian teams with Queens Park Rangers and Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq credited with an interest.
Moir is of the opinion that Nwabali could be a top candidate for QPR's goalkeeping position because he has international experience as he's first choice for a top footballing nation, Nigeria.
However, he aimed a dig at South Africa's DStv Premiership, claiming the standard of football is not the best.
Speaking to Football League World, Moir stated: "He plays out in South Africa, which is probably not the best level of football. Then again, keepers can adapt to different leagues and ways of playing.
"It would certainly be exciting, and one that I’d welcome, so if it was to happen it would be an interesting move. Although he plays in the South African league, to be Nigeria’s number one he has obviously got something about him.
"He’s also a decent age, arguably quite young for a keeper, so he has plenty of years ahead of him. It could be an exciting one and hopefully the rumours are true and something more will develop from it."
This season, the 27-year-old Nwabali has posted eight clean sheets in seventeen games in the South African top-flight while conceding fifteen goals.
