Five biggest snubs from Super Eagles latest squad, including two players with an Arsenal connection

The recently announced 27-man squad for the Nigerian national team, otherwise known as the Super Eagles, has certainly stirred up some debate among fans.

While the call-up includes a number of exciting players, there are also some notable omissions that have left many scratching their heads.

Here, allnigeriasoccer.com takes a closer look at five of the biggest snubs from the squad for the upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali scheduled for March 22nd and 26th respectively in Morocco.

1. Kelechi Nwakali

Nwakali's continued absence from the squad will continue to come as a surprise to many.

The former Arsenal midfielder has been pretty decent this season in the Portuguese Primeira Liga with GD Chaves. His creativity and playmaking abilities have been instrumental in his team's success.

With the Nigerian midfield clearly lacking a creative spark in recent outings, Nwakali's exclusion is a head-scratcher for fans who believe he could add much-needed dynamism to the center of the park.

2. Arthur Okonkwo

While Nwabali was a revelation for the Super Eagles at AFCON 2023 and might have solidified his place as the substantial No 1, there is no doubt whatsoever that the 27-year-old needs a colleague who could give him a marauding run for the first choice role. Arthur Okonkwo,

The 22-year-old goalkeeper, currently on loan at Wrexham AFC in the English Football League Two from Arsenal, has been impressing with his commanding presence and shot-stopping abilities.

The former England youth international has been putting in consistent performances and steadily making a name for himself on this loan spell.

Some fans believe he deserved a chance in order provide that much needed competition for the in goalkeeping department.

3. Olisa Ndah

Nigeria's defense before the 2023 African Cup of Nations was an area of concern at some point.

With veterans like Semi Ajayi and AFCON 2023 MVP William Troost-Ekong apparently ageing, the exclusion of Olisa Ndah seemingly comes as a disappointment.

The Orlando Pirates defender in the South African Premier Division is known for his solidity and leadership at the back.

His experience and consistent performances at club level had many fans hoping to see him included in the squad.

Ndah's continued absence may raise questions about the direction the team is taking defensively, particularly with regards to fostering continuity and longevity in the National Team.

4. Chidera Ejuke

Chidera Ejuke's omission might be a major talking point. The Royal Antwerp winger is renowned for his electrifying pace, mesmerizing dribbling skills, and ability to create scoring opportunities.

In a team often criticized for lacking attacking flair, Ejuke's absence may be a significant one. With his ability to stretch defenses and create problems for opposing teams, many fans believe Ejuke could have been a valuable asset in the upcoming friendlies.

5. Henry Onyekuru

Henry Onyekuru's exclusion is another source of debate. The Al Fayha winger seemed to have found his feet in the Saudi Pro League, registering nine goals and three assists in twenty-three league appearances this season.

His blistering pace, directness, and eye for goal have been on display in the past for the Super Eagles.

While Onyekuru sometimes fails to impress on international duty, his current scoring form and firepower on the wing could have proven valuable, especially considering the squad depth he could add to the team in that position.

The snub of these five players has sparked discussions and ignited debate amongst the Nigerian football faithful.

While the final selection is always down to the coach's discretion, the exclusion of these in-form and talented players leaves some fans questioning the team's direction and squad selection for the upcoming matches.
