Nigeria 4 Senegal 0: Edeh, Ezekiel, Olise score as defending champs advance to semifinals African Games
Published: March 11, 2024Defending champions, Falconets battered Senegal 4-0 in their second group game of the 2023 African Games, played at the Cape Coast Stadium on Monday night.
Nigeria opened the scoring in the 13th minute through the boots of Loveth Edeh and Motunrayo Ezekiel came close to doubling their lead in the 38th minute but her shot was saved by the Senegalese goalkeeper.
Edeh's strike early on in the game was the difference between the two sides heading into halftime.
Five minutes after the restart, Ezekiel doubled the advantage for the Nigerian ladies, thereby putting them in control of the contest.
With Christopher Danjuma's ladies piling more pressure on the Senegalese, they got the third goal of the game in the 51st minute through an own goal.
Four minutes after the hour mark, Danjuma made his first substitution of the game with Chiamaka Okwuchukwu coming in for Olushola Shobowale and the gaffer made another in the 78th minute, replacing Ezekiel with Isaac Delight.
In the 80th minute, Chioma Olise added the cherry on the cake for the Falconets after a brilliant build-up from Chiamaka Okwuchukwu to seal the victory.
With Cameroon pulling out of the competition, Nigeria have now qualified for the semifinals of the tournament, finishing as group winners with six points from two games.
