Peseiro speaks on the future of formidable striker Osimhen, insists his job with Super Eagles is over

Former Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro has spoken on the future of Victor Osimhen, saying he expects several top European clubs to battle for the striker's signature in the summer transfer window.

Despite signing a contract extension at Napoli until the summer of 2026, the Super Eagles star has been heavily linked with a departure from the Diego Maradona Stadium at the end of the season.

The likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are believed to be interested in the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Boot winner.

The reigning African Footballer of the Year managed just one goal during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast but caught the eye with his work rate, physicality and was a nightmare for opposition defenders, which made nonsense of the fact that he struggled to convert his chances.

Peseiro has underlined that Osimhen contributed to the success of the Super Eagles at the AFCON and labeled him a formidable player.

In an exclusive interview with Sportitalia, Peseiro said: "Victor is a formidable footballer. Even though he only scored one goal, he was very important to the success the Super Eagles had in the Africa Cup of Nations.

"A true team player who fought until the last minute, in search of victory. I think he will have several clubs interested at the end of the season and only he and his club will be able to decide his future."

Peseiro has confirmed that his job with Nigeria is over amid speculation suggesting that the Nigeria Football Federation were pushing for him to continue as Super Eagles manager until after the 2026 World Cup.

Having met his target of at least a semifinal finish, the Portuguese football tactician, who became a free agent at the start of this month, was offered fresh terms but he backed out of signing a new deal due to financial reasons.

When asked if he would consider coaching the Super Eagles despite announcing his departure, Peseiro responded: "As I said, my work with the Super Eagles is over.

"It was gratifying to coach players of such quality, with my staff we managed to do well in this sense, but the time has come to move on to another project."

Nigeria  registered eleven wins, four draws and seven losses in Peseiro's twenty-two games in charge of the Super Eagles.
