Updated England squads announcement: Eight Nigerians invited as Nwaneri, Sanusi get U17 call-ups
Published: March 19, 2024The English Football Association announced on Tuesday the England U17s roster for their UEFA U17 Euro elite round qualifiers this week, with Ethan Nwaneri and Trevan Sanusi getting call-ups, bringing the total number of players of Nigerian descent invited to the Young Lions to eight.
Four days ago, Arsenal attacking midfielder Nwaneri was not included on the U18 and U19 rosters, fueling speculation that the in-form youngster was set to be named in the U17 squad.
With an appearance in the elite round of the U17 qualifiers, Newcastle United forward Sanusi would become provisionally cap-tied to England.
Previously, the Magpies youth teamer participated in two friendly matches for England U17s in addition to appearances for the U15 and U16 squads.
2017 world champions England are set to face Hungary, Northern Ireland, and France in their group, knowing that securing a position in the top two will guarantee them a place in the U17 Euro finals in Cyprus this May.
Nwaneri has totaled at least 21 appearances for England U17s and was selected in the Young Lions squad for the 2023 U17 Euro and 2023 Fifa U17 World Cup.
As previously reported, Carney Chukwuemeka, Noni Madueke, Tim Iroegbunam, Nelson Abbey, Jamaldeen Jimoh and Tyrique George have received call-ups to the Young Lions.
