Baumgartner scores fastest-ever international goal: African record held by Super Eagles striker Onuachu

RB Leipzig midfielder Christoph Baumgartner scored the fastest-ever international goal as Austria defeated Slovakia 2-0 in a friendly on Saturday, March 23.

Baumgartner opened the scoring six seconds after kickoff, firing into the bottom corner after skipping past three challenges.

The 24-year-old beat the record previously held by Lukas Podolski,  who scored for Germany after seven seconds in a friendly against Ecuador in 2013.

Before today, the fastest international goal scored by an Austrian player was from Stefan Maierhofer who celebrated after 49 seconds in a 3-1 win against the Faroe Islands in September 2009 in a World Cup qualifier.

The fastest goal scored in an international involving an African team was netted by none other than Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu.

The Southampton loanee hit the back of the net inside ten seconds in a friendly between Nigeria and Egypt at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on March 27, 2019.

On his full debut for the Super Eagles, Onuachu opened the scoring when he rifled home a screamer from the edge of the box, off an assist from John Ogu.

Godwin Mensha has the fastest recorded goal scored by a Nigerian player, opening the scoring after just eight seconds in Mes Rafsanjan's 4-0 win against Malavan in an  Iran Professional League match on May 5, 2023.
