Simon all but ruled out of June's World Cup qualifiers after injury sustained in Nigeria v Mali friendly

With a statement on their official website, Nantes have confirmed that Super Eagles winger Moses Simon has suffered a fracture in his fibula which will rule him out for several months.

He sustained the injury in the first half of the international friendly between Nigeria and Mali on Tuesday night and had to be stretchered off the pitch.

This serves as a huge blow for the Super Eagles as the 28-year-old is set to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin respectively in June.

With the West African giants still looking for their first victory in the qualification series, Simon's injury could further deteriorate their chances of booking a place at the World Cup, being one of their vital players.

This is also a big source of concern for Nantes who would have been hoping that the Nigeria international  could help them in their relegation struggles.

Antoine Kombouaré's side sit in 16th position in the league standings, with fewer points than games played.

The explosive winger has been one of the best players for the Canaries this season, notching eight goal involvements, the joint best record for the French outfit.

Simon has started all but one league game for Nantes this season and was only omitted from the matchday squad while participating in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
