Oliseh draws parallels between Liverpool and NFF managerial hunt; wants either Amuneke or Finidi as Nigeria boss

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Sunday Oliseh, has expressed dissatisfaction with the application process utilized by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in their search for the next Eagles coach.

Nigeria began the search for a new head coach following Jose Peseiro's decision not to renew his contract after an impressive AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles secured second place in Ivory Coast, succumbing to the host team in the final.

Peseiro declared his departure from the Eagles' coaching role after being honoured by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu upon their return from the tournament.

In response to Peseiro's departure, the NFF opened up the position for potential candidates, outlining specific requirements for interested and qualified individuals.

However, Oliseh criticized this approach, citing the example of Liverpool's method in searching for a new coach following Jurgen Klopp's announcement of his departure from the club in the summer.

Oliseh said to The Punch: "Let’s look at it this way: when Jurgen Klopp came out last month to announce that he was leaving his position as coach of Liverpool, did you hear or read anywhere that the club announced that coaches should apply for the job?

"The only thing they (Liverpool) are doing currently is that they are in search of a coach that fits their philosophy and style."

While Oliseh himself did not apply for the Eagles coaching job, he threw his support behind two local coaches, Emmanuel Amuneke and Finidi George, asserting that they possess the qualities necessary to lead the Eagles effectively.

"If we (Nigeria) cannot offer our indigenous coaches opportunities to help the country’s football, then who else will?" Oliseh questioned.

"I did not apply for the Eagles job. Reports that stated so are false. I only stated that if Nigeria needed my help as a coach, I would be willing to help if the conditions are right.

"I’m open to helping Nigeria, but I did not apply for the job.

"Everyone knows I’m an advocate of an indigenous coach to lead the Eagles; those two (Amuneke and Finidi) are good for the job."
