Luton Town boss admits Lagos-born winger was played out of position on PL debut against Spurs
Published: April 01, 2024Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has admitted that Lagos-born player Fred Onyedinma was played out of position on his Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend.
Before the visit to the English capital, Onyedinma had not figured for the Hatters since the Championship playoff final win against Coventry City on May 27.
The Millwall academy product was supposed to spend the entirety of the season on loan at Rotherham United but was recalled from his loan spell at the Millers because he fell out of favour after recovering from injury.
Onyedinma is predominantly a winger but he is also able to play as a flank midfielder if the need arises.
Luton Town are facing an injury crisis at the moment with Lagos-born Republic of Ireland international Chiedozie Ogbene, 2024 Super Eagles invitee Gabriel Osho and Super Eagles hopeful Elijah Adebayo among the players in the treatment room.
The Hatters bad luck continued on Saturday with Reece Burke, Tahith Chong and Alfie Doughty coming off injured.
Onyedinma was asked to fill in for the injured Doughty at left-back after the defender picked up an injury.
Reflecting on the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Edwards said in an interview with Luton Town's official webpage: "I look at how we finished the game with that back four of Freddy, that's his first taste of football for us who is a winger at left-back and two right-backs on the pitch and once centre-back.
"It's difficult against a team of that caliber. Of course, it becomes a big challenge."
Luton Town come back to north London on Wednesday with another tough game against Premier League title challengers Arsenal.
