Awoniyi's thigh injury: Nottingham Forest striker to undergo scan later this week
Published: April 11, 2024Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo is optimistic about Taiwo Awoniyi's potential return to action in the final weeks of the season.
The Nigeria international has not been called up for the last four games played by the two-time European champions in the Premier League due to injury.
Awoniyi suffered a thigh injury before the trip to Luton Town and was forced to withdraw from the Nigeria squad for a pair of internationals against Ghana and Mali last month.
According to The Telegraph, Awoniyi is on course to hand Nottingham Forest a major fitness boost, with the center forward set to undergo a scan later this week, which will determine the ideal date for his return to action.
Initially, there were concerns that the Nottingham Forest number 9 might be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
However, there is still a possibility that he could contribute to the team's season run-in if he receives medical clearance from the doctors.
In the absence of Awoniyi, New Zealand striker Chris Wood has been instrumental, scoring in four consecutive Premier League matches, with Nottingham Forest undefeated in all but one of the games where he has scored.
The Super Eagles star has had an injury-plagued season, limiting his appearances to twenty in all competitions.
Overall, the 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup winner has missed eighteen games in the ongoing season due to fitness issues.
