Gift Orban replacement: Gent on brink of deal for tall Danish-Nigerian striker dubbed 'The New Onuachu'
Published: April 19, 2024Belgian Jupiler Pro League side KAA Gent are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Danish club Viborg over the signing of Danish-Nigerian center forward Anosike Ementa.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the negotiations between Gent, Viborg and the player are going in the right direction.
The Belgian newspaper added that the Danish striker with Nigerian roots is compared to Racing Genk goalscoring sensation Paul Onuachu due to his height (2.02m) and playing style.
Onuachu arrived at Genk from a Danish club and Gent are hoping that Ementa can replicate the performance of the FC Ebedei product who scored 85 goals in 134 matches during his time in Belgium.
Ementa has a physical presence, he's a threat from set-pieces due to his aerial ability, and also has the necessary footballing qualities.
Gent are in the market for new strikers following the sale of 2023 Super Eagles invitee Gift Orban and Hugo Cuypers to Lyon and Chicago Fire respectively last winter for a combined fee of 34 million euros with bonuses included.
The contract of experienced 35-year-old forward Laurent Depoitre will not be renewed at the end of the 2023-2024 season.
Ementa is expected to cost Gent one million euros, roughly eight times the amount Viborg paid Aalborg BK for his signature last July.
The 21-year-old, who is under contract at Viborg until December 2026, has scored eight goals in 25 games so far this season.
