PL2: Okonkwo, Nichols, Nwaneri, Butler-Oyedeji play with first team star Timber as Arsenal held by Blackburn
Published: April 22, 2024Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Blackburn Rovers in a Premier League 2 fixture at Ewood Park on Monday evening, with four players of Nigerian descent starting for the visitors.
Joining goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo in the starting lineup were Ethan Nwaneri, Josh Nichols and Nathan Butler-Oyedeji.
However, the big news was the return to action of first team star Jurrien Timber, who was making his first appearance for an Arsenal team since recovering from an ACL injury suffered on his Premier League debut on the opening day of the season back in August.
The Dutchman marked his return to competitive football in a perfect way, breaking the deadlock after seven minutes with a stunning finish into the top right corner.
Amario Cozier-Duberry doubled the Gunners advantage at minute 36 when he converted a spot kick after Butler-Oyedeji was brought down in the box.
Harrison Wood, via a deflected effort, reduced the deficit in the 38th minute before Nsangou leveled matters in first half stoppage time.
In the closing stages of the second half, Brian, younger brother of League Two's best goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, made a crucial save to deny Wood from netting the winner.
With the exception of Nichols who made way for Sweet in the 79th minute, the aforementioned players of Nigerian descent lasted the distance.
Arsenal will face Liverpool in their last match of the regular season on Sunday, April 28, before the start of the playoffs to determine the winner of the Premier League 2.
