After Ngumoha, Liverpool aiming to sign another player of African descent from Chelsea
Published: November 01, 2024
Liverpool are reportedly targeting a move for another Cobham-trained player of African descent after the capture of England U17 international of Nigerian heritage, Rio Ngumoha in the summer transfer window.
Ngumoha chose a move to Merseyside over accepting Chelsea's attempt to keep him at the club as well as offers from other European sides who showed interest in him.
After completing his move to Liverpool in September, the young forward has appeared for the Reds in the U18 Premier League and UEFA Youth League.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are one of several clubs interested in Chelsea’s young talent Josh Acheampong, who is eligible to represent Ghana internationally.
Acheampong has been frozen out of the first team and U21s by Chelsea until a resolution is achieved, with his existing contract running out in June 2026.
The English-Ghanaian right-back is reluctant to commit his future to The Blues as he feels there is no pathway into the first team as he is behind Reece James and Malo Gusto in the pecking order of right-backs.
He could be an option for other European clubs, apart from Liverpool, with Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, PSG and Borussia Dortmund also credited with an interest.
Josh Acheampong joined Chelsea at U8 level, rising through the youth ranks to make his Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur in May 2024.
The 18-year-old was a member of the senior squad that went to the United States for pre-season in the summer of 2024.
