Samuel Omorodion: Porto striker eligible for Super Eagles called up to Spain senior squad for the first time
Published: November 08, 2024
Samuel Omorodion has been handed a call up to Spain senior team for the first time in his career ahead of the European champions' UEFA Nations League games against Denmark and Switzerland.
Omorodion was born in Spain to Nigerian parents and, as a result, is eligible to feature for the European nation or the the three-time African champions.
However, the 20-year-old has represented only his country of birth, having played for the U19s, U21s and U23s and was part of the team that won the Olympics gold medial in the summer.
He made a move to FC Porto from Atlético de Madrid in August after a failed transfer to Chelsea, and has had a blistering start to life with the Portuguese giants.
Omorodion has netted 11 goals in 12 games for Porto including a brace in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League game played at Estádio do Dragão last month.
His exploits with the Dragons have now earned him a place in Luis de la Fuente's side for the first time ahead of the upcoming Nations League games against Denmark and Switzerland.
Should he feature in the two games, the former Atlético Madrid striker will still be eligible to play for Nigeria as the Fifa Eligibility Rules require an U21 player to have featured in at least four games to be cap-tied.
Samu became provisionally cap-tied to Spain on July 4, 2023, after coming off the bench for the final eighteen minutes of a 2-1 victory against Iceland in a European U19 Championship qualifier.
