'Gives the goalkeeper the eyes' - Rangers great blown away by Dessers goal against Olympiacos
Published: November 08, 2024
Rangers great Ally McCoist was left stunned on Thursday night after Cyriel Dessers’ impressive goal helped Rangers secure a 1-1 draw against Olympiacos in the UEFA Europa League.
The Super Eagles forward displayed remarkable composure to net his first Europa League goal of the season, providing a much-needed boost to the under-pressure Rangers manager, Philippe Clement.
The match, held at Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis, saw Olympiacos take the lead in the 56th minute.
Moroccan forward Ayoub El Kaabi broke away from Rangers' defense to launch a powerful shot into the top corner via the post, putting the hosts in front.
However, it didn’t take long for Dessers to respond. Just eight minutes later, he seized an opportunity to sidestep Olympiacos defender Panagiotis Retsos, who committed a misjudged tackle, before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
The goal not only rescued a point for Rangers but also provided a morale boost for Dessers, who has faced criticism and fan pressure due to a recent goal drought that stretched across eight games.
Ally McCoist, who was commentating live on TNT Sports, couldn’t hold back his admiration for Dessers' performance.
"That's a tremendous finish, I need to say," McCoist was quoted as saying by Ibrox News.
"Absolutely poor defending from Retsos diving in like that, that’s shocking. That said, the composure after it from Dessers was excellent, just side-steps the defender, gives the goalkeeper the eyes and goes back across into the far corner. That is a lovely finish.”
The strike brings Dessers' tally to nine goals and three assists across nineteen appearances this season.
