Official: Son of former Super Eagles midfielder signs five-year contract with Malmo
Published: January 09, 2025
Through a statement on the official website, Swedish Allsvenskan champions Malmo FF have confirmed the signing of Emmanuel Ekong, son of retired Nigeria international midfielder Prince Ikpe Ekong.
By signing a five-year contract at Malmo, Ekong ended his seven-year association with Italian Serie A outfit Empoli, whom he joined from IF Brommapojkarna.
At the age of 16, Reggio Emilia-born Ekong returned to Italy to join Empoli's youth academy as a professional player.
Four years later, he made his Serie A debut and, in October of last year, earned his first appearance for the Swedish U21 national team.
This season, the tri-national forward appeared in eighteen matches for Empoli, scoring two goals.
Last term, Ekong was loaned out to Croatian top division club NK Istra, where he registered six goal involvements in 21 SuperSport HNL matches, including thirteen starts.
In his first words as a player of Malmo FF, Emmanuel Ekong stated: "It feels great to finally be there, I've been longing for this. I feel that this is absolutely the right step for me considering the ambitions of Malmö FF and I want to be part of a journey with a team that always plays to win.
"It will be fun and exciting to play Swedish football again. I think the team's way of playing will suit me well, I am fast, technical and like to challenge. I hope to score a lot of points and help the team.
"I know that I will come to a good club, everyone I have spoken to has told me that. I look forward to winning titles and playing in front of nice and passionate supporters in Malmö."
Emmanuel Ekong has been allocated the number 11 shirt for the 2025 season at Malmo and will start training with his new teammates on Thursday in Marbella.
