Through a statement on their official website, National Women's Soccer League side San Diego Wave FC have confirmed the signing Falconets striker Chiamaka Okwuchukwu on a one-year contract.
The 19-year-old's transfer from Rivers Angels FC in Nigeria's Women's Premier League was announced by the club on Monday.
Okwuchukwu's impressive performance at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia caught the attention of Nigerian fans.
She played in all four matches, scoring two goals and providing one assist. This achievement came after representing Nigeria at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica, where she helped the team advance to the quarterfinals.
San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton expressed her excitement about Okwuchukwu's signing, stating that it reflects the club's commitment to adding young talent to the roster.
Ashton believes Okwuchukwu's skills will complement the team's current attacking players, making her a valuable contributor.
Okwuchukwu's move to San Diego Wave FC will see her join Super Falcons stars Asisat Oshoala, Michelle Alozie, and Uchenna Kanu (to name a few) who also play in the NWSL.
The presence of her compatriots is expected to boost Okwuchukwu's transition to the new league and team.
To complete the transfer, Okwuchukwu will undergo a medical examination and obtain her International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 Visa.
Once these formalities are completed, she will join San Diego Wave FC's 2025 roster.
The young forward was a finalist at the 2024 CAF awards, as she was nominated for the Young Player of Year award in the women's category.
As the 2025 NWSL season is set to begin in March, Wave will kick off the year at the Coachella Valley Invitation with two preseason matches on February 16 and 22.
