Osimhen scores in four consecutive Europa League matches as Galatasaray lose to Ajax
Published: January 30, 2025
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen found the net for Galatasaray in their 2-1 defeat to Ajax in the UEFA Europa League, scoring a late consolation goal for the Turkish giants.
It marked the fourth straight Europa League match in which the Napoli loanee registered his name on the scoresheet.
The Nigerian forward, who joined Galatasaray on loan, struggled to break through Ajax’s defense for much of the game but showed his sharp instincts in stoppage time.
In the 94th minute, Osimhen reacted quickest to a rebound inside the box, smashing home a powerful shot past the Ajax goalkeeper to reduce the deficit.
Despite his late strike, Galatasaray could not overturn the two-goal deficit created earlier by the Dutch side.
Bertrand Traoré opened the scoring for Ajax in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Kian Fitz-Jim finished off a counterattack with a well-placed shot.
Osimhen had several chances throughout the match but was unable to convert.
He missed a header in the 18th minute after connecting with a cross, sending his effort just wide.
In the 44th minute, he met another cross but directed his header far off target.
The Nigerian also had a headed effort saved in the 57th minute before finally getting on the scoresheet in the dying moments of the game.
His goal against the Amsterdam-based club took his tally for the season to seventeen in all competitions, including five in the Europa League.
