'A bit strange' - Bayer Leverkusen coach Alonso reacts to Boniface's failed move to Al-Nassr
Published: February 05, 2025
Bayer Leverkusen coach, Xabi Alonso has reacted to Victor Boniface's failed move to Al-Nassr in the winter transfer window.
Boniface, who joined Leverkusen from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2023, has been in impressive form, netting 30 goals and providing 11 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.
His performances caught the attention of Al-Nassr, and reports suggested that an agreement had been reached between the Saudi club, the player, and Leverkusen.
However, the deal collapsed, with Al-Nassr instead opting to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Boniface marked his return from a two-month injury layoff in style, scoring in Leverkusen's 3-1 win over Hoffenheim.
The Nigerian international opened the scoring with a powerful left-footed strike into the bottom right corner, helping the Bundesliga leaders maintain their strong campaign.
Speaking after the game, Alonso acknowledged the awkwardness of the situation but praised Boniface's response.
“It was an important moment for him after his injury,” Alonso was quoted as saying by Bild.
"The situation last week was a bit strange, uncomfortable. It was important that Boni felt important again, he should feel the love of the fans, that's good for his head."
Alonso also pointed on the possibility of Boniface playing alongside Patrik Schick, who has been on-form in his absence.
"That's an option for the future. Maybe they can play together," said Alonso after the Hoffenheim game on DAZN.
With the transfer window now closed, Boniface is expected to play a key role for Leverkusen as they push to defend their Bundesliga title.
