EFL Cup: Two Nigeria eligible talents on the bench for Tottenham in 4-0 loss to Liverpool
Published: February 06, 2025
Two Nigeria-eligible youngsters, Callum Olusesi and Damola Ajayi were on the bench as Liverpool secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to advance to the Carabao Cup final.
The young talents from Tottenham sat on the bench, despite the team's struggles with injuries to key first-team players.
Callum Olusesi, a standout performer for Tottenham youth teams this season, made his debut in the UEFA Europa League against TSG Hoffenheim.
His impressive performances in the Premier League 2 and FA Youth Cup have drawn the attention of Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.
The 17-year-old midfielder has made a significant impact, netting four goals in nine Premier League 2 matches and adding one goal in two Youth FA Cup appearances.
Despite his rising star status, Olusesi remained on the sidelines for the entirety of the match against Liverpool, where goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Virgil van Dijk overturned a first-leg deficit and secured Liverpool's place in the final.
The defeat marks a challenging moment for Tottenham, who had hoped to build on their first-leg advantage.
Liverpool's victory sets up a showdown against Newcastle United in the final, scheduled to take place at Wembley Stadium.
As both Olusesi and Ajayi are eligible to represent Nigeria's U20 team, their inclusion could bolster the Flying Eagles' squad ahead of the CAF U20 tournament.
The Flying Eagles recently qualified for the tournament after triumphing in the WAFU Zone B tournament held in Togo in 2024, and the addition of these promising young players could prove pivotal for Nigeria's campaign.
