Arsenal-trained midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed deep admiration for Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha, naming him as his greatest footballer of all time.
In a heartfelt conversation on the podcast Is This SEAT Taken? with Chinasa Anukam, Iwobi fondly referred to Okocha as his "uncle" and a source of continuous inspiration both on and off the field.
The 28-year-old Iwobi, who currently plays for Premier League club Fulham, has long been an admirer of Okocha's skill and charisma.
Reflecting on Okocha's iconic career, which saw him play for top clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers, and the Nigerian national team, Iwobi shared how the legendary midfielder's influence went beyond football.
"In the sports? Forever my uncle, Jay Jay Okocha," Iwobi said. "I have to shout him out all the time. On and off the field."
The admiration Iwobi has for Okocha is clear, with the former Arsenal star drawing inspiration from Okocha's technical brilliance, leadership qualities, and the positive impact he had on the game.
Okocha's flair, vision, and creativity set him apart as one of Africa's greatest players, and Iwobi sees him as a mentor who not only shaped his understanding of the game but also served as a model for personal conduct.
Iwobi, who grew up watching Okocha’s performances for both club and country, credits him for instilling a sense of pride and identity in Nigerian football.
He highlighted Okocha's ability to inspire and unite players, leaving a lasting legacy in Nigerian football history.
"I have always looked up to him," Iwobi continued. "Not just because of his ability on the ball, but also his mentality and leadership. He showed us that we could compete with the best."
Having spent time at Arsenal’s youth academy, Iwobi's growth as a professional was influenced by many footballing greats, but Okocha’s mentorship and his contributions to the game have made him the standout figure for Iwobi.
Okocha's impact on the Nigerian football landscape is undeniable.
His incredible skill set and innovative approach to the game inspired a generation of players like Iwobi, who now carries the torch for Nigerian football on the international stage.
