'There's a lot of interest' - Rangers striker Dessers confirms receiving multiple offers in winter market
Published: February 07, 2025
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has confirmed receiving multiple transfer offers from European clubs during the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox, with clubs from Italy and Spain reportedly interested in securing his services.
However, despite the speculation, Dessers remained with Rangers after reclaiming his spot in the starting lineup.
His agent, Stijn Francis, recently revealed that the Nigerian forward received ten offers in January, a claim Dessers has now validated while speaking to the media ahead of Rangers' Scottish Cup fifth-round clash against Queen's Park.
Reflecting on the situation, Dessers admitted there was genuine interest in his services, especially during the early part of January when he was not playing regularly.
"If we look at the full picture because it's not only at the end or what my agent said obviously, at the beginning of the month I was not playing a lot," Dessers was quoted as saying by Rangers Review.
"As a striker that at that point was on, I don't know, double numbers already, then obviously there's a lot of interest.
“Teams that call my agent and ask, 'He's not playing, is there something possible?”
Despite the interest, Dessers revealed that he maintained regular discussions with Rangers' technical director Nils Koppen before ultimately deciding to stay at the club.
"But I've been in touch, I spoke I think two or three times with Nils [Koppen].
"We had very good conversations about the situation and yeah, I'm here now, three weeks later and I'm very happy to be here."
The Nigerian international clarified that while he never pushed for a transfer, his priority was to secure more playing time.
"I didn't want to leave or anything, but I wanted to play. The last few weeks I've been getting into a better form again, the team as well, so yeah, then everything as well.
"Then obviously the situation changed at the beginning of January, so for me there are no big question marks.
"I think it's normal if a striker scores that there will be interest, especially if you look at the situation I was in at the beginning of January, but by the end of January that changed already, so I think that makes the question less relevant."
Despite facing challenges, Dessers has had a productive season with Rangers, scoring 18 goals and providing six assists in 37 matches across all competitions.
With his recent resurgence in form, the Nigerian forward will be aiming to maintain his momentum and potentially earn a call-up to the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
