Bayer Leverkusen striker Boniface lost N56 billion after failed winter move to Al-Nassr
Published: February 09, 2025
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface reportedly missed out on a massive €36 million (N56 billion) deal after his proposed move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr collapsed in January.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward was heavily linked with a switch to the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Nassr sending representatives to Germany to negotiate with both the player and his club.
Boniface reportedly agreed to the move, but the deal fell through at the last moment, with Al-Nassr instead signing Aston Villa striker Jhon Durán.
According to the online edition of German daily national newspaper welt, Boniface was set to earn €45 million (#70 billion naira) net over three years with Al-Nassr.
However, Leverkusen are reportedly set to reward Boniface with a pay raise if he extends his contract until 2029. His current salary of €3 million per year (gross) is expected to double to €6 million.
Over the next three years, he is projected to earn around €9 million net—significantly less than what he would have received in Saudi Arabia.
The Nigerian striker missed out on a €36 million net deal, approximately N56 billion in Nigerian currency, following the last-minute collapse of the transfer.
Despite the disappointment, Boniface has quickly reintegrated into Xabi Alonso's team since returning from injury, scoring in two of Leverkusen's last three matches.
He netted the opening goal in the 3-1 Bundesliga victory over Hoffenheim and later came off the bench in the DFB-Pokal quarter-final against 1. FC Köln, scoring the decisive goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory.
