Five reasons Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle should convince Chelsea CB Tosin to play for Nigeria

As Nigeria's Super Eagles prepare for their crucial 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March, newly appointed head coach Éric Chelle has a major opportunity to strengthen his squad.

One of his top priorities should be convincing Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo to commit his international future to Nigeria.

The 27-year-old center-back has been a standout performer for Chelsea since joining the club in July 2024, and his inclusion in the Super Eagles squad could be a game-changer.

Defensive Reinforcement

Nigeria has struggled with defensive consistency in recent international matches, a key reason why the team currently finds itself in a difficult position in the World Cup qualifiers.

Tosin's presence could provide much-needed stability at the back. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, he is a commanding figure in the air and excels at winning aerial duels, an area where the Super Eagles have been vulnerable.

His ability to read the game, make crucial tackles, and organize the defense would greatly benefit a Nigerian backline that has often looked uncoordinated in recent matches.

International Experience and Versatility

Despite never making a senior appearance for England, Tosin has represented the Three Lions at various youth levels.

His exposure to high-level European football has equipped him with a strong tactical understanding, which would be invaluable to Nigeria as they seek to qualify for the World Cup.

Additionally, he has played in different defensive systems at Manchester City, Fulham, and now Chelsea, making him a versatile option for Éric Chelle.

Whether in a back three or a traditional center-back pairing, Tosin has proven he can adapt to different tactical setups.

Immediate Impact Potential

Tosin's current form suggests he could have an immediate and significant impact on Nigeria’s defense.

Since moving to Chelsea, he has quickly established himself as a key player, even scoring a memorable brace in an FA Cup match in January 2025.

His performances in the Premier League and European competitions have demonstrated his ability to handle pressure at the highest level.

If Chelle can convince him to join the Super Eagles, Tosin could step straight into the starting lineup and help Nigeria secure vital points against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

A Long-Term Defensive Solution

At 27, Tosin is entering his prime years as a defender. Nigeria has struggled to find a consistent defensive leader in recent years, and he could be the long-term solution.

By securing his commitment now, the Super Eagles would not only address their immediate defensive concerns but also build a stable foundation for the future, including the 2026 World Cup itself.

His leadership and experience would also benefit younger defenders in the squad, helping to improve the overall quality of Nigeria’s defense.

National Pride and Representation

Convincing Tosin to play for Nigeria would be a significant statement. It would highlight the Super Eagles’ ambition to attract top talents of Nigerian descent and could inspire other dual-nationality players to choose Nigeria over European nations.

This would strengthen the team’s depth and quality moving forward.

With the World Cup qualifiers fast approaching, Éric Chelle must act swiftly to bring Tosin into the fold.

His addition could be the key to Nigeria’s success.
