'Struggling with scoring problems' - Pundit backs Obi to replace misfiring Hojlund in Man Utd lineup
Published: February 20, 2025
As Manchester United struggles in front of goal, questions arise about the future of Rasmus Højlund, who has not found the back of the net in his last 15 appearances.
In light of this ongoing drought, football pundit Flemming Toft believes it may be time for the 17-year-old sensation, Chido Obi, to step into the limelight and replace Højlund in the starting lineup.
Toft pointed out the pressing need for manager Ruben Amorim to explore alternative options in the attack, especially given the alarming statistic of ten consecutive matches without a goal from Højlund.
"Rasmus Højlund is struggling with playing and scoring problems at Manchester United. This could mean that the pressured manager Ruben Amorim gives Chido Obi a chance in the hunt for United goals,” Toft remarked during a recent discussion on Campo.
Despite his youth, Obi has already made a significant impact at the club level.
He recently made his official debut for Manchester United, coming on as a substitute in the dying minutes of a match against Tottenham.
His performance garnered praise from Amorim, who recognized the young striker's potential.
"Obi may only be 17 years old, but he got a few minutes against Tottenham and lots of praise from Amorim, who would have liked to keep him a little longer," Toft noted.
Obi’s track record at the youth level speaks volumes about his ability.
He has been in remarkable form, netting seven goals in just three U-18 games, showcasing his scoring prowess and making a strong case for more playing time.
"Amorim feels compelled to try something new in a season with 10 games without a United goal,” Toft added, emphasizing the dire situation the team finds itself in.
The club’s reliance on Højlund, who has yet to deliver the goals expected of him, may be waning as Obi’s stock rises within the squad.
Fans are hopeful that Obi can become a key player for United, especially with the potential to secure a starting position at such a young age.
The excitement surrounding Obi is growing, and his rapid ascent through the ranks could be the spark Manchester United desperately needs to ignite their goal-scoring form.
With the stakes high and the pressure mounting, all eyes will be on manager Ruben Amorim's next move regarding the Manchester United lineup.
Will he place his faith in the youthful exuberance of Chido Obi, or continue to rely on the faltering Rasmus Højlund?
Only time will tell, but the anticipation is certainly building as United looks to turn their fortunes around.
