Former Watford striker Troy Deeney believes Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman can reach the peak of his career under the guidance of Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid, following his impressive start at the club.
Ademola Lookman, who joined the Rojiblancos during the winter transfer window, has made an immediate impact, registering three goals and two assists in five appearances across all competitions.
Speaking on CBS, Deeney believes the timing is now right for the forward to take another step, particularly in a system that combines discipline with clarity.
"But, I think there's a moment now in time for every footballer that is perfect. He is a kind of guy, yes he has spark, but he needs structure," Deeney said.
Deeney pointed to Atlético Madrid as an ideal destination, highlighting the tactical organisation under manager Diego Simeone.
"He needs to know who, what, and where. He gets that at Atletico. You know what you're doing under Diego Simone, how it's supposed to be, and what you're supposed to go and then show what you have. I think he's a perfect fit for both him and the team," he explained.
Deeney also reflected on Lookman's spell in the Premier League, where he felt the winger struggled to perform at Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City.
Despite possessing exceptional qualities, the 37-year-old believes the Nigerian International did not receive the trust or stability needed to thrive, especially at Craven Cottage.
"In England, he never got the trust when he was at Fulham," he revealed. "They never gave him a sure position. Don't worry if you make a mistake, we will give you the ball again.
He recalled a defining moment during Lookman's loan stint at Fulham when the forward missed a penalty against West Ham United in November 2020 and subsequently fell out of favour
"I remember him, he tried to do the Paneka, he missed it and he was gone," he recalled while analyzing the UEFA Champions League match between Atletico Madrid and Club Brugge.
Despite the setback, Deeney insisted the talent was always evident and credited Atalanta for giving the Nigerian international the freedom and responsibility to express himself.
"The talent was there and I also think Atalanta trusted him to be the bright spark," he said.
Lookman will be keen to maintain his fine form as Atletico Madrid compete for trophies domestically and on the continent.
