'A proven player' – 2023 Eredivisie POTY hails Ndidi's qualities after Besiktas debut

Beşiktaş midfielder and 2023 Eredivisie Player of the Year Orkun Kökçü has spoken highly of Wilfred Ndidi, describing the Nigerian international as a proven player whose qualities will bring balance to the team.

The Black Eagles began their 2025/26 Trendyol Super League campaign on a winning note, defeating Eyüpspor 2-1 in their home opener at BeÅŸiktaÅŸ Stadium.

Tammy Abraham put BeÅŸiktaÅŸ ahead in the 19th minute with a penalty, before Mame Thiam equalized for the visitors on the half-hour mark.

With the game heading for a draw, Rafa Silva struck a stunning injury-time winner, sealing all three points for BeÅŸiktaÅŸ.

After the match, Kökçü highlighted the importance of Ndidi’s arrival, pointing out the Nigerian’s experience and reliability.

"Ndidi is a proven player,” he said, as quoted by Lider Haber, stressing that the 28-year-old midfielder will be an asset to the squad.

Kökçü also explained why he believes Ndidi’s presence will help his own game.

"I think he'll be a good fit for me, too, because defense isn't my strong suit,” he admitted. “He's trying to cover that."

The 24-year-old acknowledged, however, that the team is still in the early stages of adapting to new signings.

"As I said, we haven't been able to train much. I think we'll adapt better,” he continued, noting that Beşiktaş will need time to reach their full potential.

Ndidi, who joined BeÅŸiktaÅŸ after eight years at Leicester City, is widely respected for his tackling and positional play.

Fans will be eager to see how quickly his partnership with Kökçü develops, with the duo expected to form the backbone of Beşiktaş’s midfield this season.
