Werder Bremen's Head of Professional Football, Peter Niemeyer, has confirmed that Nigerian forward Victor Boniface will meet knee specialists in early January to determine the best course of action for the injury he sustained in December.
The 25-year-old, currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has missed Bremen's last two fixtures against Stuttgart and Augsburg due to the setback.
Boniface, who arrived at Bremen with high expectations, has struggled to reach his peak form this season.
The Super Eagles striker has registered only two assists in eleven appearances, and the recent knee injury has further cast doubt on his availability for the remainder of the campaign.
Providing clarity on the situation, Niemeyer confirmed that Boniface will travel to Innsbruck on Wednesday, January 8, for an examination by a renowned knee expert, adding that the consultation will determine whether surgery is necessary.
"Victor will travel to Innsbruck on January 8th to see knee expert Prof. Dr. Christian Fink for an examination with a view to a possible operation," he told Werder Bremen's official website.
He stressed that the striker's return timeline will depend entirely on the diagnosis.
"We want to wait for the examination results first. The next steps will then be determined based on that. I ask for your patience in the meantime."
Boniface was absent from Bremen's training session on Friday as preparations intensified for the Bundesliga's resumption.
