The Super Eagles midfielder was notably absent from Brentford’s matchday squad on Sunday as the Bees suffered a 2-0 defeat to Ola Aina’s Nottingham Forest.

It is confirmed that Onyeka was omitted from the squad due to an imminent transfer, with the club keen to avoid any risk of injury.

Brentford’s decision was influenced by Onyeka’s recent physical demands with the Nigeria national team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, prompting caution as negotiations over his future reach an advanced stage.

The FC Ebedei product has attracted interest from clubs in the Championship as well as sides in Spain, with several options being explored ahead of the window deadline.

Onyeka became Brentford’s first signing of the Premier League era in July 2021 following his move from FC Midtjylland.

Since then, he has made 87 appearances for the West London club, registering one goal and six assists.

The energetic midfielder is open to leaving Brentford in search of regular playing time, having struggled for opportunities this season.

He has yet to start a Premier League match in the current campaign, with all six of his appearances coming from the bench.

The 28-year-old spent the 2024-2025 season on loan at German Bundesliga side Augsburg, where he made 33 starts in all competitions, further underlining his desire for consistent first-team football.
