Chelsea agree N1b-plus deal for Nigerian-eligible fullback, three PL clubs miss out

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign talented 17-year-old fullback of Nigerian-descent  Yisa Alao from Sheffield Wednesday, beating three other Premier League clubs to his signature,  according to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer reportedly includes an initial fee exceeding £500,000 (approximately N1 billion in Nigerian currency), with additional performance-related add-ons included in the agreement.

Alao has been a standout figure at Sheffield Wednesday, progressing through the club’s academy since joining at the under-7 level.

He made his senior debut against Bolton Wanderers in August 2025 and has received multiple first-team call-ups this season, featuring in Championship, Carabao Cup, and FA Cup matches.

The young fullback made his first-team starting debut in an FA Cup clash against Premier League side Brentford, playing for an hour in a 2-0 loss.

His performances have attracted attention from several top Premier League clubs, but Chelsea ultimately secured his signature.

Alao’s move to Chelsea represents a significant step in his career, providing him the opportunity to develop further at one of England’s leading clubs.

The young fullback’s progression through the academy ranks to senior football highlights his potential and readiness for top-flight competition.

Chelsea’s acquisition of Alao continues the club’s focus on recruiting promising young talent with the potential to integrate into their first-team plans over the coming seasons.

The agreement, once finalized, will see the defender join the Blues and continue his development within a Premier League setup.
