Werder Bremen coach Daniel Thioune has confirmed that Super Eagles defender Felix Agu will not start for the Bundesliga side in their upcoming match against Mainz.
Thioune made the announcement during a pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Sunday’s fixture.
Speaking about the fitness of Agu and teammate Samuel Mbangula, Thioune said, "They definitely won't be starting this week. although we'll make a decision on Saturday at the earliest as to whether they'll be in the squad or not."
He made the remarks to the official website of Werder Bremen, highlighting that Agu’s participation in training remains limited as the defender continues his recovery.
Addressing concerns over squad selection, Thioune commented on Agu and Mbangula’s readiness, emphasizing that the duo’s involvement would depend on medical clearance.
"Neither of them have been fully reintegrated into team training yet. If they feel ready and we get the go-ahead from the medical staff, then they may play a role."
The 26-year-old Agu has been sidelined since February after sustaining an injury during the pre-match warm-up ahead of Werder Bremen's 2-1 defeat to FC St. Pauli.
Since then, the former VfL Osnabrück defender has been undergoing rehabilitation and limited training to regain full fitness.
