Crystal Palace have decided to retain Chrisantus Uche for the remainder of the season following his encouraging performance in the 1–0 win over Fulham, according to Standard Sport.
Uche, who arrived on loan in the summer with an obligation to buy should he make 10 Premier League starts, has struggled to adapt to life in England.
The Nigerian forward is yet to score or assist in five league appearances, a stark contrast to his impressive form at Getafe last season where he registered four goals and seven assists in 38 La Liga matches.
His slow start had fueled speculation of a possible return to Spain in January. However, those rumours have been laid to rest after his lively display at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
Introduced in the second half for Jean-Philippe Mateta , Uche added energy to Palace’s attack, recording a 100 percent pass accuracy, registering one shot on target, and missing a big chance to net his first Premier League goal.
Palace have no intention of terminating his loan, with the club backing the forward to develop under manager Oliver Glasner.
The Austrian coach may also need additional attacking cover following the possible exit of Ismaila Sarr to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Uche, who is unlikely to be named in Nigeria’s squad despite being named in the 54-man provisional list, will be an option for the Premier League club.
Ahead of the winter window, the 22-year-old will instead focus on building on his improved showing as he pushes for increased minutes in the coming fixtures.
