Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained his decision to substitute Samuel Chukwueze during Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania, addressing the winger’s visible frustration as he left the pitch in the Africa Cup of Nations Group C opener.
Nigeria secured all three points in their opening match of the tournament, but post-match discussions focused on Chelle’s decision to withdraw Chukwueze, who did not appear pleased with the call.
Speaking to the media after the game, the Super Eagles coach clarified that the substitution was based on tactical needs and overall squad management, not on the player’s performance.
Responding to a question about Chukwueze being taken off and his reaction, Chelle acknowledged the competitive nature of the group.
“Yes, of course, we have in this team a lot of big names. They are competitors; they are not happy when they go to the bench,” he said, explaining that such reactions are normal within a highly driven squad.
Chelle then outlined the tactical reasoning behind the change, referencing Nigeria’s shape during the match.
“My job is to make choices, and we're playing a 4-4-2 diamond, and at this moment I feel we have to protect the wing,” he stated, pointing to the need for balance and defensive coverage as the game unfolded.
The Super Eagles coach was keen to stress that the decision had nothing to do with Chukwueze’s individual contribution.
“This is not a question about his game. He played 60 minutes, and we have 26 players in this team,” Chelle explained, reinforcing that the winger’s display was not in question.
Emphasizing his broader tournament approach, Chelle highlighted the importance of the collective over individual roles.
“If you want to win a tournament, it is not only a question about 11 players; this is a question about the group. I have to give a chance to everybody in this group,” he said.
Chelle concluded by reflecting on the team’s mindset and the outcome of the match, while acknowledging there is still room for improvement.
“They come to the pitch with a great set of mind, so I am happy with the three points, but we have a lot of work to do again,” he added.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to their next Group C fixture, where the Super Eagles are set to face Tunisia on Saturday, December 27.
